The Leading Tone: Transforming Business Through Music

The Leading Tone provides a transformational learning experience for leaders at every level from business and sales executives to non-profit and community leaders, using the orchestra as a metaphor for teamwork and conducting as a tool for leadership.

Our programs spark people to do the inner work needed to effectively inspire trust, promote collaboration, and galvanize the people around them to follow their lead.

Background:

Every leader plays the role of conductor on a daily basis, ensuring that experts within a multidisciplinary team are able to contribute effectively – finding harmony among individual voices to serve a collective goal. As a leader, balancing the different voices on your team is essential to arrive at best decision points for your organization. You must bring more to the table than technical skills, intellect, and charisma.

Whether it is in the boardroom or in the concert hall, great outcomes are born from diverse teams with thoughtful leadership that allows each member to contribute effectively and in balance with the rest of their peers.

A great conductor must communicate with and inspire others to realize their vision, all the while allowing their team of musicians the freedom to do their best work. The conductor learns to take risks and respond confidently in the moment to whatever happens and develops a mindset that includes curiosity, high stakes listening, flexibility, and the desire to build strong relationships.

What participants experience:

Leading Tone links best practices from the world of music with specific, actionable business behaviors. Through highly interactive and experiential programs involving members of the Kendall Square Orchestra, participants learn to strengthen their leadership and communication skills to meet strategic goals.

Benefits and key takeaways for participants:

  • Understanding of the concept of the conducting as powerful active leadership model and the tools to help your leaders achieve it

  • Expanded ability to communicate with intention and impact through voice, gesture, and language as a conductor does in rehearsal with his or her musicians.

  • Acquire a new vocabulary for discussing leadership and collaboration.

  • Practical techniques from the world of music that will help influence, inspire, and motivate your team members to reach their potential, while supporting the goals of the company.
